Dennis Uniform Lays Off 71 Portland Employees, Moves Jobs To Texas

A Portland school uniform manufacturer will lay off 71 employees for moving some operations to Texas.

Dennis Uniform, one of the nation’s largest suppliers of school uniforms, notified regulatory authorities last week of its plans to move decorating and storage operations to a “more centralized” Texas location.

The company said the layoffs would be permanent. The employees, located at the company’s location at 135 SE Hawthorne Blvd., would lose their jobs on Nov. 1, the company said in a letter to the state under the Workers’ Adjustment Notification Retraining Act.

Most of the workers are represented by the United Food & Commercial Workers Union Local 555. Of the jobs that have been cut, 32 are in warehouse operations, 15 in logo production, 15 in embroidery cutting and nine in screening. The employees were notified of the impending layoff last week, the company said.

It was not immediately clear whether the company plans to move all or only part of its operations to Texas.

Dennis Uniform did not answer calls and emails for comment.
